Believe you me, some days are better than others. We all get a case of CRS every so often, so consider yourself forgiven. C(an't) R(emember) S(hit). Just for those wondering.

ok, the brewing went great last night. Blakus made a batch that should come out pretty close to my dark maple cream ale cept stouter. hes gonna call it "Rowdy Stout" in honor of his first dog that had to be put down due to very old age 3 years ago yesterday.
i took my first attempt at brewing a honey ale. upon the sample tasting of both beers, we are positive that both batches will turn out incredible just so long as nothing goes wrong while in fermentation.
our next 2 batches that we will brew possibly this weekend are gonna be good too. Blakus is attempting to make a bell's amber ale and i am attempting my first had at an oatmeal stout. should be interesting me thinks!

I am constantly amazed that the number and variety of alcoholic beverages that fall under the broad category of "beer."

just think! i havent even touched the surface on how many varieties there are! there are literally thousands of different styles of beers out there! simply changing the hops can change the outcome of a beer. Blakus's explosivo beer is actually a recreation of a previous beer he made and the only change in the ingredients was the hops. they didnt have the type of hops we used for the previous batch so we had to go with hops that had slightly lower alpha acids and the end result was a totally different flavor of beer as opposed to the previous patch.

I assume you are referring to ales, laggers, meads and stouts. Dad used to work for both Shultz and Coors. I grew up surrounded by beer. Oh! I forgot to mention malt liquor.

ales, lagers, stouts, porters, meads, wits/wheats/hefeweisens, malts (which beer in general is made from malts anyway), bitters, barely wine, ambers, darks, creams, lights, fruity based beers, etc etc etc. and in each catagory there are literally hundreds, if not thousands of varieties.

this oatmeal stout im gonna be brewing should be interesting. i will have to start my batch an hour before Blakus starts his as i have to seep the grains and oatmeal flakes for 45 minutes to an hour at 150*F BEFORE i even start the normal boil. they are very time consuming and delicate to make so by friday night, i will fully understand why oatmeal stouts cost so much to buy from the beer stores.
fortunately, Blakus's wife told him it was ok if he comes over right after work so we can get everything prepped and ready in a leasurely mannor while we wait for my brother to arrive. usually on a brew day, im busting my ass to clean everything from dishes to the stove to the table to our brewing tools, filling the water jugs, prepping the portable sinks for the bleach and sanitizer etc etc. i usually do all that in an hour or two and am usually sweating my ass off and worn out before we even get started.

i also forgot to mention that Blakus's wife has been doing some research for buisness grants and stuff for us too. of course, shes just as eager about getting the whole thing up and running as we are so she can quit her accounting job she has now and then work for us!

FUCK!!!
k, so i pitched more yeast into the oatmeal stout. grant it, the temp was low which was why it wasnt fermenting in the first place. but NOW i find out that true stouts typically take longer to start fermenting than normal beers anyway, plus the CO2 sometimes lingers just above the beer itself and doesnt always cause the airlock to bubble..... for godless sakes, i hope to hell that i didnt fuck this batch up by opening it up and adding more yeast.....

well, the bottling went relatively smoothly with the exception of the cats pestering us. i cant wait to put up a screen door between the downstairs kitchen and the upstairs kitchen.
both samples of the brews were quite good and should be even better once theyre carbonated.
Blakus's next brew should be ready to bottle by this weekend. my oatmael stout wont be ready til either mid next week or next weekend.

well, as some of you may have seen yesterday, my oatmeal stout ended up being fucked up just like i feared. we're sending Z off to church with my mom today as part of his punishment for getting another ISS at school this past week. so im gonna make RD let me head to springfield while hes gone so i can get the new and improved ingredients for my new oatmeal stout recipe.

k, got enough to brew 2 batches of beer instead of one like i planned. mostly due to the fact that they had the cheap DME thats usually sold out every time in there. gonna get the oatmeal later today since i forgot to get it at walmart earlier. and then i will be brewing most of the evening/night after my son is gone.
