I live in a pretty diverse area, so take your pick of religions. We have Sikhs, Jews, Muslims, Baptists, Jehovah's Witnesses (they'll probably knock on my door again tomorrow) and any other flavor of Christian imaginable, I've also met some Hindus & Buddhists as well. Not so many Shintoists, though. Smile

I'm going to guess that Abrahamic are the most common religions in this area (near DC).

In addition to the Catholics, Baptists of various flavors, the Church of Christ, United Methodists, Jehovah's Witnesses (Skywise was raised as one), the Presbyterians, more little independent congregations than you can shake a stick at, we have these jokers.... http://www.rickross.com/groups/firstborn.html

Thank you -- thank you!

Independent Congregations, hmmm I like that term -- are there other terms or ways that you all explain "those groups".

Nicely, like in the newspaper -- not like to your friends as the "whack a mole crazies"\

The independent congregations usually start out as Bible study groups made up of people who are not entirely satisfied with the church they are currently attending and can't find another that meets their needs. So, in the spirit of "do it yourself" (not to mention the very earliest Christians) they start their own independent church, meeting at each others homes until they can afford to rent space. If they can attract enough members, they eventually acquire land and build their own facilities. They range from very conservative/ fundamentalist to very liberal and everything in between. Some of them devote their energies to some sort of "mission work" such as running homeless shelters, soup kitchens or other community projects. Once they have their own facilities, if there are enough young children in the congregation they almost invariably start a daycare center. If I were going to explain the process to a Wiccan/pagan person, I would use the example of a number of people practicing a recognized form of Wicca who, while finding the faith itself satisfactory in the main, realize that it is not a perfect fit for them. So, they stop referring to themselves as members of that tradition, take those elements of it that work for them and then build on those elements until they have created something that works for them spiritually. What they do is still "Wicca" but it is not part of a recognized tradition. Likewise most Christians recognize the independent congregations as fellow Christians since they all consider a profession that Jesus is their Lord and Savior who died for their sins to be the only real requirement to be considered a Christian.

I hope that helps AND made sense.

The differences are usually in matters of practice (infant or adult baptism for example) and doctrine and/or interpretations of scripture.

beats me, i know the catholics do the baby baptism. i think all of the christian churchs around here practice the "when you decide" thing for baptisms. and of course the local baptist church (which is alot like all of the rest of them) practice the whole "get saved" thing but dont require an actual baptism and then think they can do whatever they want as if its a get outta hell free card.

You'll find a least a few of those in every congregation.

anyone that wants a peek at where this is headed -- is welcome to lookey loo -- but is it NOT ready for Prime Time -- and until all the pieces are up, not going out widely -- cause the plan is a real shake up, in the real world

Small town areas: Methodist is the other big denomination.

In larger towns: Locally we have a few synagogues, mosques, and the Indian population is working on gathering funding to build a center for Hinduism.
