| I have Windows because it's cheaper and easier to get hold of where I live. Would prefer Mac (which I used to have). Have never used Linux. What are it's advantages to people like me who are not really into technology beyond writing, surfing and downloading tunes? | |

| Linux is free, stable, and you can do all the same things on it as you can in Windows. I've been running Linux Ubuntu v. 8.10 on my laptop since March. It's never had to be re-installed and doesn't hog memory like windows. The only problem I've seen so far with Linux is finding a compatible webcam for it when using programs like Skype. Otherwise, it's not bad. | |

| I'm a Linux geek. Two issues I've had of late are A) I've never been able to run a DVD on ubuntu, I've downloaded every possible codec and it just won't work and B) Netflix doesn't work on Linux | |

That's odd. I can play dvds. Which version of Ubuntu are you running?

That's odd. I can play dvds. Which version of Ubuntu are you running? I started with 8.04 and am currently running 9.10, haven't ever been able to play a dvd. I've read that it is a common issue, and tried many fixes including adding every Codec I could and I've tried medibuntu with no success

| I know that some people who have tried playing blu-ray discs have had no success but the older dvds will play. I haven't upgraded to the new version of Ubuntu because I have heard there too many bugs in it. I also use VLC media player which seems to play more of my movies than Totem movie player. Which media player are you using? | |

I honestly haven't tried too many movie players, that may be my next step, right now I just have the generic "movie player" that comes with Ubuntu

| Give VLC a shot. It typically has more codecs to choose from when playing movies or video files. If that doesn't work then I'm out of suggestions. Hope this helps. | |

Actually after doing a reinstall of everything mentioned above DVD's are working...now if only I could get the cheap ass games and Netflix to work I would be a happy man

| Well glad at least one problem is solved. Don't know anything about Netflix and the only games I play are the freebies that come with Linux or when I want to add one. Keeps the kid happy. | |
